This superb picture was taken by David Bauckham whilst he recently covered the Deal Town v Redhill FA Vase fixture. The photograph shows Gary Croft (Battle) leading out the players together with his team of Leigh Crowhurst (Uckfield) on our left and Tim Ammans (Ramsgate).
Together with Terry Buckman, David is gathering material for their next book, "A Season of Sussex Soccer". in order for the book to be published they are looking for 300 patrons each to contribute just £10. In return everyone will have the name of their choice printed in the book as well as receiving a copy of the book. The retail price of the book alone is expected to be around £13. Please support the publication of this book, visit their website for more detailshttp://www.ccpub.co.uk
David recently wrote to SUSSEXREF explaining more about Terry and his project, " After several years following Eastbourne Borough around the Southern League and latterly Conference South (or Blue Square South to keep the marketing men happy), it has been a pleasure going back to my ‘County League Roots’ to produce A Season Of Sussex Soccer during the current season.
Whilst some grounds do not appear to have changed a bit since I last visited, others – notably Crawley Down, Crowborough, East Grinstead and Hassocks - have undergone considerable improvements, and it is good to see Sussex clubs demonstrating ambition through such developments. As someone who is primarily an enthusiast of football grounds I have been keen to feature these; and also to visit new venues. Division Three of the County League in particular has been blessed over the past two seasons by the addition of three idyllic settings in the shape of Loxwood, Rottingdean Village, and latterly Dorking Wanderers.
However, in addition to the scenic, action, and ‘behind the scenes’ shots, my co-author Terry Buckman and I are also making a conscious decision to try to include match officials in some of our photographs. This is no easy task unless we simply take the easy option of photographing a referee as he (or she) brandishes a card or paces out ten yards for a defensive wall.
One thing I never considered previously, and certainly not until I started watching a game through a viewfinder, was that a good referee is unlikely to be in the middle of the action. Instead, he will have positioned himself slightly ‘out of shot’, albeit up with play rather than under the players’ feet and in the middle of my action photograph!
The FA Cup & FA Vase have however, presented an opportunity for match officials to take centre stage as they lead the players out. A good referee should go unnoticed by those watching the match but Terry and I thought it would be good to give them the recognition they deserve.
It’s been a thoroughly enjoyable past couple of months: between us we have covered over forty games for the book but there is still a long way to go, not to mention some difficult editorial decisions to make. We are roughly a third of the way towards meeting our target of £3,000 in order to make the book viable so please help us by supporting the project.
More information can be found on the Centre Circle Publishing website at http://www.ccpub.co.uk and if you see a camera pointing in your direction at Bosham, Hurstpierpoint or Westfield, smile: it’s probably Terry or me".
